My main research interests are the processes and mechanisms behind animal learning and behavior. My research has been focused on topics such as learning flexibility, timing and numerosity perception, choice and decision making. For instance, I have studied how pigeons adapt their behavior to changes in the environment through a task in which reinforcement contingencies reverse midway through the session (Midsession Reversal task, e.g. Soares, Santos, Machado & Vasconcelos, 2020). I have also been interested in how pigeons learned to maximize distance to food (time or number of pecks) in a numerosity discrimination task involving a choice between two options. More recently, I have been studied choice biases in temporal discrimination tasks (e.g., Soares, Sousa & Pinto, 2023).
