Higher education across Africa plays a crucial role in promoting socioeconomic development, innovation, and empowering youth to participate actively in building equitable societies. One emotion that is likely to deactivate students' engagement is academic boredom. Boredom is commonly viewed as an affective state characterized by unpleasant feelings, lack of stimulation, and low physiological arousal. It is often portrayed as one of the major problems of modern society, as it is common among many college students and faculty members. Existing data and anecdotal evidence suggest a concerning trend worldwide: approximately half of the students are frequently bored in class and tend to exhibit poor learning outcomes. These impressive data may help to explain why researchers are focused on exploring its impact on student learning and achievement. Academic boredom is an unpleasant emotion characterized by low arousal and an impulse to change activities or abandon a particular academic task. Academic boredom is prevalent in the lives of college students in Africa, as it is a global phenomenon affecting academic performance, engagement, and psychological well-being. However, there is a lack of research on the role of motivational determinants in the learning process among university students in Angolan universities, namely on academic boredom. The current thesis presents two chapters addressing academic boredom in the African context. The first explored the construct and its relationships with motivational variables and academic achievement, while the second examined a path model to understand the associations between academic boredom, students' procrastination, self-regulated learning, and academic cheating. A total of 595 undergraduate students from the Social Sciences department at Agostinho Neto University in Angola were enrolled in the research. Current findings indicate that academic boredom is positively related to academic procrastination, and academic procrastination is negatively related to the use of SRL. Finally, the current data did not reveal a statistically significant relationship between academic procrastination and academic cheating. Globally, the findings of this work are expected to help researchers, particularly those in African universities, develop research on academic boredom and assist educators in implementing early interventions to prevent signs of academic boredom in college students.
